De Sint-Catharinakerk in de Sint-Katelijnestraat is prachtig gerestaureerd langs de buitenkant en het plein rond de kerk is heraangelegd. De stad Mechelen wil nu ook het interieur aanpakken. “Dergelijke grootschalige en complexe restauraties vergen heel wat voorbereiding. Volgens de meerjarige subsidiëringsovereenkomst die we in december hebben afgesloten met de Vlaamse overheid, is de restauratiepremie voorzien in 2015. Met de grondige historische en materiaaltechnische onderzoeken die we nu uitvoeren, willen we de geschiedenis van deze gotische kerk achterhalen zodat we bij de restauratie de juiste keuzes kunnen maken”, zegt schepen van Monumentenzorg Karel Geys (sp.a).
De stad stelt de nodige experts aan die de Sint-Catharinakerk zullen bestuderen. Dit gebeurt via een onderzoek van het gebouw zelf en een historisch onderzoek, waarbij specialisten op zoek gaan naar alle mogelijke bronnen die ons iets vertellen over de geschiedenis zoals archieven. Deze gegevens vormen de basis van het restauratiedossier dat de stad moet indienen voor de start van de effectieve werken.
Het interieur is op sommige plaatsen aangetast door vocht. Hier en daar is een nieuwe verflaag nodig en een aantal glas-in-loodramen zijn stuk. Ook zie je in de kerk een aantal scheuren in het metselwerk. “Terwijl we de restauratie voorbereiden, gaan we ook al een aantal dringende werken uitvoeren om schade te voorkomen. De restauratie van het meubilair kan later in overleg met de kerkfabriek in fasen aangepakt worden.” gaat Geys verder.
De Mechelse binnenstad heeft met haar 8 historische kerken de grootste concentratie van beschermde kerken in heel Vlaanderen. De cultuurhistorische waarde overstijgt het lokale belang. Daarom heeft Mechelen eind vorig jaar een overeenkomst ondertekend met de Vlaamse overheid om de historische kerken de komende jaren verder te restaureren. “De totale kostprijs van de restauratie is geraamd op €2.404.590. De stad betaalt hiervan €446.141. Dankzij de subsidiëringsovereenkomst kunnen we voor de rest van het bedrag rekenen op een restauratiepremie”, besluit Karel Geys.
