In de Philippus de Montestraat worden 28 appartementen van de sociale huisvestingsmaatschappij Woonpunt Mechelen vervangen. Gemeenteraadslid en fractieleider voor sp.a Thijs Verbeurgt zit in de jury die het ontwerpteam zal aanstellen. Opvallend, want sp.a behoort in Mechelen tot de oppositie. Een bewuste keuze van Woonpunt-voorzitter Arthur Orlians.
Woonpunt Mechelen wenst 28 kleine appartementen in de Philippus de Montestraat te vervangen door moderne woonentiteiten die voldoen aan de huidige woonvereisten en energetische normen. De huidige appartementen dateren al van 1975. Verschillende architectenbureaus krijgen de kans om een jury ervan te overtuigen dat hun ontwerp voor de vervangbouw het beste ontwerp is. In de jury zitten mensen van Stad Mechelen, VMSW en Woonpunt Mechelen. Voor die laatste partner is dat meestal ook de voorzitter, Arthur Orlians, maar deze keer niet.
Arthur Orlians: “Als mijn generatie politici één opdracht heeft, dan is het wel om op een andere
manier aan politiek te doen. We hebben nood aan mensen die samenwerken, over de grenzen van partijen heen. Thijs Verbeurgt is lid van de raad van bestuur van Woonpunt Mechelen, een goede collega die steeds constructief mee nadenkt over de beste oplossing en ik ben er zeker van dat hij
mee een goede ontwerper zal voordragen.”
Thijs Verbeurgt reageert alvast tevreden. “Een betaalbare woning op maat van elke Mechelaar is
voor ons als sp.a één van de grote uitdagingen voor de komende jaren. Zowel binnen de gemeenteraad als binnen Woonpunt werk ik daarom actief mee aan het zoeken naar oplossingen en het uitbreiden van het aantal betaalbare woningen. Politiek draait voor mij immers om oplossingen, in het belang van alle Mechelaars.”
Voor de voorzitter van Woonpunt gaat het niet om een eenmalige stunt. “Voor de eerste keer in de
Mechelse geschiedenis kozen we ervoor om leden van de oppositie in onze raad van bestuur op te
nemen. Een goede zaak, want zo kijk je kritisch naar wat je doet en beslist. Het zorgt voor nieuwe
inzichten en houdt je scherp. Nu gaan we nog een stapje verder en krijgt de oppositie een stem in de keuze van nieuwbouwprojecten. Zo werken we in Mechelen allemaal samen aan een beleid waar we trots op kunnen zijn”, aldus Arthur Orlians
