Elke dag krijgen gemiddeld meer dan 100 Vlamingen te horen dat ze kanker hebben. Onderzoek blijft nodig om de overlevingskansen te verhogen en de levenskwaliteit voor mensen met kanker te verbeteren. De 1000km van Kom tegen Kanker is één van de vele acties die plaatsvinden om geld in te zamelen voor degelijk onderzoek.
“Ik ben als schepen dan ook zeer verheugd dat we de ‘1000 km van KOTK’, in 2014, weer in onze stad mogen ontvangen. De volledige opbrengst van dit evenement wordt geschonken aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek.” weet schepen Walter Schroons te vertellen.
Sinds 2011 fungeert Mechelen als gaststad voor dit evenement tijdens het Hemelvaartweekend. We zien het aantal deelnemende ploegen steeds groeien van 267 tot 459 vorig jaar. Dat is bijna een verdubbeling. Het doel is 4 dagen in ploeg te fietsen met telkens start en aankomst op onze Grote Markt hier in Mechelen.
Het evenement leeft echt in onze stad en ook bij de stadsdiensten. Vorig jaar werd er met het personeel €7700 ingezameld zodat onze deelnemende ploeg een mooi bedrag kon schenken aan KOTK.
Omdat we dit evenement echt in de kijker willen zetten werken we een heus toeristisch aanbod uit voor deelnemers en supporters. Naast een mooie Grote Markt hebben we een hele waaier aan hotels, restaurants, winkels en musea waar zij terecht kunnen voor ontspanning na een rit van 250 km of wanneer zij aan het wachten zijn op hun familielid, vriend, kennis, … die ondertussen aan het fietsen is.
In 2014 vindt de 1000 km van Kom op Tegen Kanker plaats van donderdag 29 mei tot en met 1 juni 2014.
