Enkele weken geleden kondigde het Mechels stadsbestuur aan dat het Groot Begijnhof zowel parkeervrij als enkel voor lokaal verkeer toegankelijk wordt. Ondertussen konden bewoners zich uitspreken over een circulatieplan voor het doorgaand verkeer, waarvoor drie mogelijke scenario’s op tafel lagen. De stad maakte vandaag het geselecteerde scenario bekend. “Er is gekozen voor een evenwichtig circulatieplan dat het Groot Begijnhof voor bewoners vanuit veel richtingen toegankelijk maakt.”
De Begijnhofbewoners mochten tijdens een bewonersvergadering op 9 januari hun mening geven over drie verschillende circulatieplannen. 50 bewoners gaven hun mening achteraf nog via mail door, waarna alle input en voorkeuren werden verzameld en ook het college van burgemeester en schepenen zich over de mogelijke scenario’s kon uitspreken.
Zowel voor de bewoners als voor het schepencollege kwam scenario 2b als beste naar voren. In dat scenario krijgt de Nonnenstraat een knip en wordt ze deels één- en tweerichtingsstraat. Een aantal andere straten veranderen ook van rijrichting.
Het gekozen circulatieplan heeft twee doorslaggevende voordelen. Enerzijds verzekert het een goede toegankelijkheid van het Groot Begijnhof, waarin in- en uitrijden via verschillende routes (Schrijnstraat, Nieuwe Beggaardenstraat en Guido Gezellelaan) mogelijk zal zijn. De verkeersstromen zullen zich zo evenwichtig over het stadsdeel verspreiden wat overbelaste straten vermijdt. Anderzijds komt er door de knip in de Nonnenstraat ook een nieuw plein aan de kerk.
Het parkeervrij maken en de nieuwe verkeerscirculatie gaan in vanaf juni 2023. De nieuwe verkeerssituatie wordt daarna opgevolgd en geëvalueerd.
De knip aan de Begijnhofkerk en het verdwijnen van parkeerplaatsen resulteert in 1900m² ruimte, het equivalent van bijna drie tennisvelden. Stad Mechelen wil samen met de bewoners ideeën en plannen voor die vrijgekomen ruimte verzamelen. Een groenere invulling, fietsenstallingen, bankjes, laad- en loszones behoren tot de mogelijkheden. In een eerste fase komt er een ontwerp voor een eerste zone die bestaat uit de Nonnenstraat en het plein voor de kerk, daarna komen de Schrijnstraat, Twaalf-Apostelenstraat en Moreelstraat aan bod.
Op 2 mei zal een eerste ontwerp voor zone 1 klaar zijn, waarop de bewoners tijdens een bewonersmoment feedback kunnen geven. In juni en augustus wordt dit ontwerp gerealiseerd, gaan de mobiliteitswijzigingen in en zal ook het ontwerp voor zone 2 klaar zijn. Een tweede bewonersmoment begin september biedt bewoners de mogelijkheid om ook over dit plan hun mening geven, dat tegen november gerealiseerd moet zijn.
Met de maatregelen wil de Dijlestad een van de troeven van haar stad, bovendien Unesco-werelderfgoed, nog meer tot zijn recht laten komen, tegemoetkomen aan klachten over doorgaand en sluipverkeer en ruimte maken voor zachte weggebruikers en groen. De omschakeling was ook aangewezen doordat het nog een van de enige begijnhoven ter wereld was waarin wagens nog toegelaten waren.
