“Er was nooit een gezondheidsrisico volgens de asbestinventaris van de veiligheidscoördinator. Toch wilden we de schuur nu al afbreken. De buren stoorden zich er al lang aan en zo riskeren we ook geen onverwachte problemen als de werf eenmaal start,” stelt Kassandra Driezen, directeur van Kleine Landeigendom Mechelen en Omstreken. Bij asbest worden de materialen nat gemaakt en afgedekt afgevoerd zodat er geen stof kan vrijkomen. Zo is er geen risico voor de buurtbewoners.

Kleine Landeigendom Mechelen en Omstreken bouwt in de Zonnestraat-Boerenkrijgstraat 34 sociale koopwoningen in 8 bouwblokken: er komen 12 woningen met 4 slaapkamers, 18 woningen met 3 slaapkamers en 4 woningen met 2 slaapkamers, allen met tuin. De Vlaamse Maatschappij voor Sociaal Wonen legt de infrastructuur aan; er komt ook, in samenwerking met Stad Mechelen, een publiek parkje en extra parkeerplaats. “Daar staan we met plezier een deel van onze grond voor af aan de stad Mechelen, we hopen dat de sociale cohesie tussen de buren daarmee versterkt zal worden.” zegt voorzitter Melikan Kucam. De bouwwerken en infrastructuuraanleg duren in totaal twee jaar. Om een woning te kunnen aankopen in dit project moet men ingeschreven zijn op de wachtlijst.
