Op zaterdag 26 en zondag 27 april staan ‘Fleur je straat’ vrijwilligers paraat om plantjes te bedelen. Nieuw is het aanbod eetbare planten.
Sinds 2004 verdeelt de stad in het kader van het Stad om te Zoenen initiatief gratis eenjarige plantjes en potgrond onder haar inwoners. Zo’n 40.000 stuks vinden elk jaar hun weg naar Mechelse bloembakken en tuinen. Dit jaar breidt de stad het aanbod uit met tijm, peterselie, basilicum en bieslook: “We maken werk van een eetbare stad. Sowieso is het een goede zaak dat mensen bloemen aanplanten. Maar ook kruiden en zelfs groenten als pluksla of radijsjes kunnen perfect in potten gekweekt worden. Daarom breiden we dit jaar het aanbod uit.”
De kruiden zijn niet alleen eetbaar, ze zijn ook goed voor het bijenbestand van de stad: “Er zitten soorten bij die wanneer ze in bloei staan zeer gegeerd zijn door de bijen omwille van hun nectar. Zo geven we ook onze plaatselijke biodiversiteit een duw in de rug,” aldus schepen van leefmilieu en duurzaamheid Marina De Bie.
