Het kunstgrasveld is aangelegd in wijk Otterbeek. In totaal zijn er – verspreid over 15 landen wereldwijd – al meer dan 180 Cruyff Courts gerealiseerd, waaronder in Nederland, Engeland, Spanje, Zuid-Afrika, Japan, Maleisië en Brazilië. Voor België heeft Mechelen dus de primeur.
In aanwezigheid van heel wat buurtbewoners en genodigden werd vandaag het eerste Cruyff Court in Mechelen feestelijk geopend in wijk Otterbeek.
Mechelen heeft er een sportieve dag op zitten. Deze ochtend al namen leden van het Mechelse schepencollege,
managementteam en medewerkers van communicatiedienstverlener BT – initiatiefnemer van het court – deel aan een estafettewedstrijd vanaf Vilvoorde tot aan het Cruyff Court in Mechelen. Met de race zamelden ze geld in voor de Cruyff Foundation. Voormalig sprintster Kim Gevaert gaf in Vilvoorde het startschot. Ook in de namiddag hielp Kim de
jongeren op te warmen voor hun toernooien en andere sportinitiaties. Soufiane Touzani, ambassadeur van de Cruyff Foundation en pionier van het moderne freestylevoetbal, animeerde de jongeren met enkele freestyle initiaties op het gloednieuwe court.
